DRG Readiness

Preparing Your Hospital for AR-DRG in Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia is shifting inpatient payment from fee-for-service to AR-DRG v9.0 case-based reimbursement. Under the new model, accurate coding and documentation directly determine revenue.

What is changing

Under fee-for-service, providers are paid for each service. Under case-based payment, an inpatient episode is coded with ICD-10-AM and ACHI and grouped into an AR-DRG. The group carries a weight, and the weight — combined with the agreed price — determines the payment for the episode.

Because the group is set for the episode, the payment is prospective. There is no retroactive re-billing of the same episode as there would be under fee-for-service.

Why coding accuracy matters more than ever

  • A missing secondary diagnosis keeps a case in a lower-weighted DRG.
  • Unspecified codes hide severity, defaulting the case to a lower weight.
  • An incorrect principal diagnosis sends the case to the wrong group entirely.
  • A missing procedure code can fail to trigger a surgical DRG.
  • Documentation gaps for CC and MCC mean the severity is never recognised.

Where revenue leaks

Most DRG losses are not dramatic — they are the cumulative effect of small documentation and coding gaps repeated across thousands of episodes. A DRG-focused audit quantifies that gap by comparing the group actually assigned with the group that accurate coding would produce.

How MedSure helps

We combine an enterprise revenue-cycle platform with consulting and training. A typical DRG readiness engagement includes:

  • A DRG-focused coding and documentation audit to size the opportunity.
  • Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) support so severity is captured.
  • Coder and physician training on DRG mechanics, CC/MCC and principal-diagnosis selection.
  • Case-mix and KPI monitoring to sustain improvement.
  • Consulting on payer contracts and pricing data.

Getting started

Every facility has a different case mix, specialty profile and data quality. We start with a focused audit so you can see the revenue impact before committing to a wider programme. Contact us to discuss your hospital.
